Debemos aceptar que aquellos sacrificios podrán medirse de diferentes formas y valorarse de diferente manera, según sea el objetivo perseguido.
Por ejemplo, un costo puede ser calculado para asignar valor a los inventarios de bienes de cambio en un estado de situación patrimonial destinado a terceros, y servir de base para una cotización de precios.
También puede ser utilizado para seleccionar un proveedor de materias primas, prever cuál será el resultado económico del próximo período, fijar las tarifas de los servicios públicos, determinar la conveniencia de ciertas operaciones de venta, entre muchas otras cosas. Por lo tanto, siempre existe una magnitud de costo más adecuada para cada objetivo.
